Exploring Roof Styles: A Guide by Reliable Design-Build-Remodel

As experts in construction and remodeling, Reliable Design-Build-Remodel is here to guide you through the various styles of roofs commonly seen in residential and commercial buildings. Roofs play a crucial role in protecting your property from the elements while also enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Let’s delve into the different types of roof styles and designs to help you make informed decisions for your next roofing project.

The Five Main Types of Roof Styles

  1. Gable Roof: This classic roof style features two sloping sides that meet at a ridge, forming a triangular shape. Gable roofs are popular for their simplicity, efficient water drainage, and suitability for various architectural designs, making them popular in cold and temperate climates.
  2. Hip Roof: A hip roof has slopes on all four sides, meeting at a peak or ridge. This style offers excellent stability and is ideal for areas prone to high winds or heavy snowfall.
  3. Flat Roof: While not completely flat, flat roofs have a very low slope that allows for easy installation of HVAC units, solar panels, or rooftop gardens. In essence, they’re more designed for human foot traffic. They are commonly used in modern commercial buildings.
  4. Mansard Roof: Also known as a French roof, a Mansard roof has a double slope on all four sides, creating a distinct and elegant look. This style provides additional living space in the form of an attic or extra rooms. While beautiful examples of Mansard roofs can be found on palatial estates and mansions, typical examples can be found in most neighborhoods.
  5. Gambrel Roof: Similar to a Mansard roof, a Gambrel roof has two slopes on each side, but the lower slope is steeper than the upper slope. This design maximizes interior space and is often seen in barns and Dutch Colonial-style homes.

The Most Expensive and Least Expensive Roof Styles

The cost of a roof depends on various factors such as materials, complexity, and size. Generally, complex designs like Mansard or Gambrel roofs tend to be more expensive due to additional construction requirements and materials. On the other hand, simple gable or hip roofs are more cost-effective.

The Most Common Style of Roof

In residential construction, gable roofs are among the most common due to their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and ease of construction. They complement a wide range of architectural styles and can accommodate various roofing materials.

What style roof lasts the longest?

Roof style has almost nothing to do with how long the entire roof last, that depends entirely on the construction materials used. In order of least to most durable materials:

  • Asphalt Shingles: asphalt shingles last around 20 years; however, higher-quality asphalt shingles can increase that number to 50 years.
  • Architectural Asphalt: lasts about 30 years on average.
  • Wood Shingles and Shakes: wood roofing has a target lifetime of 30 years, but will have a shorter lifespan in volatile climates.
  • Metal: Metal roofing lasts between 40 to 80 years.
  • Slate, concrete and clay tiles: each of these products is rated for a life expectancy of 100 years or more, though your mileage may vary.

Understanding the different styles of roofs empowers homeowners and builders to choose the right option based on functionality, aesthetics, and budget.
