Measuring Replacement Windows: A Guide from Reliable Design-Build-Remodel

Replacing windows is an important project that can greatly improve energy efficiency, comfort, and the aesthetic appeal of your home. At Reliable Design-Build-Remodel, we know that measuring for replacement windows accurately is essential for a smooth installation process and the best possible fit. Here, we’ll walk you through the key questions involved in measuring replacement windows to ensure your new windows provide the function and look you’re after.

How do you measure windows for replacement?

When measuring windows for replacement, it’s crucial to measure carefully and take multiple measurements to ensure accuracy. Begin by measuring the width and height of the existing window frame, not the sash or glass. Start with the width, measuring from the left jamb to the right jamb at three points: the top, middle, and bottom. Write down the smallest of the three measurements, as this will prevent the new window from being too large. Next, measure the height of the window from the head jamb to the sill, again taking measurements at the left, center, and right sides. Use the smallest measurement as the final height. Lastly, measure the window depth to make sure it can accommodate the replacement window. This thorough measuring process will ensure a proper fit and avoid costly adjustments during installation.

What are standard replacement window sizes?

Replacement windows come in a variety of standard sizes to fit the most common rough openings. While exact dimensions can vary by manufacturer, typical window sizes are often categorized by type, such as double-hung, casement, and picture windows. For example, double-hung windows commonly come in widths ranging from 24 to 48 inches and heights from 36 to 72 inches. Casement windows tend to have widths between 14 and 35 inches and heights from 24 to 84 inches. Picture windows, which are larger, often have widths between 24 and 60 inches, with heights ranging from 12 to 60 inches. Familiarizing yourself with these standard sizes can make it easier to find replacements that closely match your existing windows, reducing the need for custom sizing and potential additional costs.

How much smaller than the rough opening should a replacement window be?

Replacement windows generally need to be slightly smaller than the rough opening for proper fit and adjustment. Most contractors recommend that a replacement window be about 1/2 an inch smaller than the rough opening, meaning that 1/4 should be subtracted from the width and height. This small gap allows for insulation, shimming, and sealing around the window, which are crucial for preventing drafts and ensuring a secure installation. It’s important not to leave too much extra space, as it can make installation challenging and reduce the effectiveness of weatherproofing. This clearance also accommodates minor variances in the opening and makes it easier to adjust the window during installation.

How is window size calculated?

Calculating window size involves understanding both the visible and structural measurements. When calculating the visible size of a window, measure the frame dimensions that contain the sash. This includes the width and height of the interior frame where the glass sits, excluding any additional trim. For the structural size, which is crucial for replacement projects, you’ll want to calculate the window size based on the rough opening measurements. Measure from the inner side of each stud that forms the rough opening, which includes the framing that supports the window. This measurement ensures that the replacement window has enough structural support and fits properly within the opening, providing a secure and energy-efficient installation.
