Fall Checklist: Roof Maintenance Tasks to Complete

As the leaves change color and the temperatures drop, it’s time to prepare your home for the upcoming winter months. Completing roof maintenance tasks is crucial during this time of year to prevent costly repairs and protect your home. Professional design and build contractor Reliable Design-Build-Remodel shares five important roof maintenance tasks to tackle this fall.

1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Leaves, debris and even small branches can accumulate in your gutters over the summer and early fall. If left unattended, these blockages can lead to water overflow, causing damage to your roof, siding and home foundations. Remove all debris from the gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water drainage. Check for any signs of damage or leaks and repair them promptly. You can seek the help of the professional to do the cleaning for you, but for a more long-term solution, consider installing a gutter protection system.

2. Inspect the Roof

Take a close look at your roof’s surface. Look for loose or missing shingles, damaged flashing and any signs of wear and tear. Pay special attention to areas around chimneys, vents and skylights, as these are common trouble spots. If you notice any issues, addressing them promptly is essential to prevent water infiltration.

3. Check Attic Ventilation

Your attic needs adequate ventilation to maintain consistent temperatures and stop moisture from accumulating. Otherwise, the components of your roofing system, from the shingles to the wooden rafters, may be at risk of deteriorating faster than they should. Check attic vents for debris, making sure they are free from obstructions for air to flow freely in and out of the roof.

4. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches

Overhanging tree branches can pose a threat to your roof, especially during winter storms. Branches of old trees, in particular, are prone to breaking, potentially causing significant damage. Trim back any branches within six feet of your roof to reduce this risk.

5. Seal Roof Penetrations

Roof penetrations, such as vents, pipes and chimneys, are common points of vulnerability. Ensure the flashing around these penetrations is in good condition and properly sealed. If you notice any gaps or signs of deterioration, reseal or replace the flashing to prevent leaks.
