What is drywall?

Drywall, also known as gypsum board or plasterboard, is a panel made of gypsum plaster that is sandwiched between two sheets of thick paper.  It is a versatile material that is easy to install, durable, and cost-effective, which is why it has become the preferred choice for interior wall and ceiling construction.

What is drywall used for?

Drywall is used for a variety of purposes, including creating smooth and flat surfaces for painting or wallpapering. It also provides a barrier against sound, heat, and moisture, making it an excellent insulator. Moreover, it is fire-resistant, which can help to contain fires and prevent them from spreading.

What are the different levels of finishing drywall can have?

There are six levels of drywall finishing, numbered from zero to five, each with its own degree of smoothness and level of finish. Here’s a brief overview of each level:

• Level 0: This level involves applying drywall panels without any finishing, leaving the joints and fasteners exposed. This is the bare minimum installation of drywall, and often is used when the drywall installation is only temporary.
• Level 1: This level involves covering the joints and fasteners with joint tape and joint compound, but the finish is not smooth. Typically level 1 drywall is installed in places not meant for a lot of foot traffic, due to the more unrefined look compared to later levels.
• Level 2: This level involves applying a second coat of joint compound over the tape and fasteners, and lightly sanding it down to create a smooth surface. Level 2 is most commonly seen in garages and warehouses.
• Level 3: This level involves applying a third coat of joint compound, and sanding it down to create an even smoother surface. This level is typically used for walls that will receive a light texture, for ceilings, or any interior that is meant to be textured and painted.
• Level 4: This level involves applying embedded joint tape on all seams and corners. After this, installers apply two coats of joint compound over the seams, one coat over the corners, and three coats over the fasteners. The result is a near-perfect blend between panels and seams, and is typically used for areas where a high level of smoothness is required, such as in a kitchen or bathroom.

• Level 5: This level is the highest level of finishing, and requires incredible amounts of skilled labor to produce. It requires all the processes of the previous steps, in addition to a thin, final coat of joint compound and a sanding process that results in an almost supernaturally smooth wall from edge to edge. This process is prohibitively expensive, so usually it is only found is buildings like art galleries, high-end homes, etc.

What is the difference between drywall and “sheetrock”?

Many people often use the terms “drywall” and “sheetrock” interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Sheetrock® is a brand name that was invented in the early 20th century, and is owned to this day by the United States Gypsum Corporation. Drywall, on the other hand, is a generic term that refers to any panel made of gypsum plaster and paper.

Are drywall and plaster the same thing?

While both materials are used to create smooth and flat surfaces on walls and ceilings, they are not the same. Plaster is a traditional building material made from a mixture of gypsum, sand, and water, while drywall is a more modern invention that uses gypsum plaster sandwiched between two sheets of paper.
