How To Layer Lighting in Your Bathroom

Lighting is a critical aspect of bathroom design, affecting how we perceive the space and perform various tasks. With layered lighting, however, the bathroom can become the relaxing and rejuvenating oasis you want it to be. Let’s learn how to layer lighting effectively in this post by renowned bathroom renovation expert Reliable Design-Build-Remodel.

Understanding Layered Lighting

Good bathroom lighting goes beyond a single overhead fixture; it pivots on creating layers of light to serve different purposes. Symmetrical lighting positioned along the walls, as opposed to a singular overhead light, allows for flexibility to cover the entire bathroom space. Creating layers with different lighting elements provides ambiance, task and accent lighting—contributing to the functionality of the room. Commonly, a balanced lighting scheme may include soft overhead lighting, bright mirror task lights and strategic accent lights.

The Art of Task Lighting

Task lighting is indispensable around the vanity, where precision tasks such as shaving or applying makeup occur. Aim for a brightness of around 700 lux for these areas, almost akin to full daylight, using dimmable 75 to 100-watt bulbs for flexibility. Wall sconces or fixtures positioned at the sides and atop the mirror are ideal for dispersing shadows and providing an even distribution of light.

Enhancing With Ambient and Accent Lights

Ambient lighting allows for general visibility, where an evenly distributed soft light enhances the room’s overall feel. This could be through multiple overhead fixtures or optimized use of natural daylight. Accent lighting then adds depth, focusing on decorative elements and lending character to the bathroom. These lights should be narrowly focused to highlight specific features without overly brightening adjacent spaces.

Embracing Natural Light

Natural light is invaluable and should be maximized in bathroom design—adjusting your circadian rhythm and elevating mood. Add more windows, change window treatments, or install a skylight, which can be beneficial in terms of aesthetic appeal and energy efficiency.

Selecting the Right Fixtures

When choosing fixtures for a layered lighting plan, consider options like pendant lights, recessed lighting and wall sconces. Each plays a unique role: pendants add an artistic touch, recessed lighting offers a clutter-free solution, and wall sconces can provide elegant task lighting.

Special Considerations for Wet Areas

In the bathtub and shower areas, be sure to use fixtures rated for wet locations to ensure safety and durability. Recessed canister lights or waterproof flush lighting fixtures are often preferred for their minimalistic yet effective illumination in these areas.

Implementing LED Lighting

With energy efficiency an ever-important aspect of home remodeling, LED lighting has become a popular choice for bathrooms. They offer a high color-rendering index, produce a pleasant light and last much longer than traditional bulbs. Ensure your LED lights are suitable for dimmer switches if you wish to have that functionality available.

Avoiding Bathroom Lighting Faux Pas

When designing your bathroom lighting, avoid poor-quality fluorescent lighting, overly yellow, or pink lights that can be flattering but offer poor task lighting. Likewise, refrain from misplacing downlights, which can create harsh shadows and unflattering glare.
