Do’s and Don’ts of Designing a Powder Room

A powder room, also known as a half bath, consists of only two main components: a toilet and a sink. This makes it smaller compared to a standard bathroom. A powder room is also usually found on the first floor and can be used by guests coming over the stay overnight. If you’re interested in adding one to your home, here are a few do’s and don’ts of designing a powder room.

DO Prioritize Functionality

Unlike your main bathroom, you will not be relaxing in a powder room. It is where you are going to get in and out, so you need to make it as functional as possible. The vanity should be in a convenient location, for example. You should also store bar and liquid soaps. Many homeowners prefer a pump bottle for easy access and use. Find out if you’ll be needing a sitting area in your powder room as well.

DON’T Use Toilet Paper as an Accessory

Storing stacks of toilet paper rolls in your powder room is not attractive and only increases clutter. Instead of putting a tower of toilet paper rolls next to the toilet, you can pile them in a linen closet. If you like to keep a roll or two nearby for convenience, try using a small holder that fits on the tank or floor. If you have guests staying over, you should consider having a box of tissues in your powder room so they won’t have to rip off a piece from the roll.

DO Consider Lighting Options

Most powder rooms are small and do not have any windows, which means natural lighting is out of the equation. For this reason, you need to install the right fixtures to compensate for the absence of sunlight. Since the space of your powder room is at a premium, you need something that doesn’t take up a significant amount of space. Your bathroom remodeling contractor may recommend a bar light over the mirror or a sconce light on the wall. These lighting options are not only aesthetically appealing but also practical.

DON’T Create Extra Storage

A powder room isn’t the right place to store extra supplies. Thus, don’t focus too much on adding extra cabinets or shelves. Doing so may only clutter the floor and reduce the available floor space. If you have items you need to put in the powder room, use hooks instead. You can also save space by opting for a wall-mounted sink as an alternative to a traditional sink.
