Kitchen Island or Peninsula: Which One Should You Choose?

One of the many decisions homeowners have to make when planning a kitchen remodel is choosing between an island or peninsula. Both features are meant to augment the aesthetics and functionality of the space by offering extra space and storage, and an area for entertaining guests across the room. Here’s a look at the notable features of each option and when either one makes sense over the other.

Kitchen Island

A kitchen island serves multiple functions while also acting as one of the primary focal points of the space. It can also provide additional storage – it can be fitted with base cabinets and drawers. The extra counter space means it can accommodate both a bar-style eating area and another kitchen feature like a cooktop or sink.

An island is a worthwhile addition if you have a wide enough space, especially if your kitchen has a U-shaped layout. To get the most out of this freestanding unit, make sure it is not smaller than 40 by 40 inches. To allow for ease of traffic, there should be a minimum clearance of three feet around the island.

Kitchen Peninsula

A peninsula is similar to an island in that it also serves multiple functions as stated above, except one of its sides is attached to a wall. Depending on your existing space, it can be short or long, which means it can fit into a kitchen of any size.

You can integrate a peninsula into your kitchen if you want to create some sort of partition that defines your kitchen from the rest of your home. This is especially true if you have an open plan concept, which allows you to establish zones without having to build up walls. A peninsula also gives you the opportunity to create either an L- or U-shaped kitchen layout.
