Reliable Design-Build-Remodel knows that choosing the right material is essential for the success of any project. Two substances that are commonly used in the remodeling industry are polyurethane and urethane. In this blog post, we will discuss the differences between these substances, their chemical makeup and properties, and their most common uses.
What is Urethane?
Urethane is a polymer composed of organic units. It can be used in various forms, including foam, liquid, and solid. Urethane has excellent abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, and good flexibility. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of coatings, adhesives, and sealants. Urethane is also used in the production of foam insulation and elastomers. For more scientific facts on this topic, click here!

Is Urethane Plastic or Rubber?
Urethane is neither plastic nor rubber but is classified as a polymer. Its properties can vary depending on the type used, but it is generally more flexible than plastic and more durable than rubber.
Is Urethane Toxic to Humans?
It is generally considered safe for humans when used as directed. However, prolonged exposure to urethane dust or fumes can cause respiratory problems and skin irritation. Proper safety precautions, such as wearing protective gear and working in a well-ventilated area, should always be taken when working with urethane.
What is the Difference Between Polyurethane and Urethane?
It’s an extremely important to note that the terms polyurethane and urethane are often used interchangeably, because of their chemical composition; Polyurethane is a polymer, essentially a long chain, made of urethane links. In essence, they are the same thing, the only difference being the length of the polymer chain, and thus the amount of the urethane.
However due to their different usages in different industry products, and their different practical applications, many consider them to be completely different materials. In many industries, including construction, automotive, and manufacturing, these materials are used as sealants to prevent moisture and air leaks, adhesives for bonding materials together, and to cast mold, injection mold, or 3D print custom parts. Many familiar foam products are made of Polyurethane/Urethane, including kitchen sponges!

In the remodeling industry, urethane and polyurethane are both types of coatings that provide a protective layer to a surface. Both of these coatings provide a durable, protective finish, but polyurethane tends to be harder and more scratch-resistant than urethane; this is due to polyurethane having more urethane in its composition, which is what gives it its increased durability. Urethane is a water-based finish, and is a relatively new product on the market, while polyurethane is oil-based and has been around for a far longer amount of time. It is a popular choice for remodelers due to its excellent durability, flexibility, and resistance to abrasion, and it is commonly used in the production of coatings, adhesives, and sealants. Remodelers use urethane coatings to protect surfaces from damage and wear and to prevent moisture penetration and air leaks, such as floors, cabinets, and countertops.
Why is urethane acrylic finish used?
Urethane acrylic finish is a popular choice for a variety of applications, including woodwork, furniture, and cabinetry. This type of finish provides a clear, protective coating that helps to protect the surface from scratches, moisture, and other types of damage. Acrylic finish is also easy to apply and dries quickly, making it a great option for projects that require a fast turnaround time.
Why is polyurethane finish used?
Polyurethane finish is a great option for surfaces that need to be highly resistant to scratches and wear. This type of finish is often used on floors, tabletops, and other high-traffic areas. Polyurethane acrylic finish is also resistant to moisture and chemicals, making it a great choice for areas that are exposed to water or other liquids.
Both urethane and polyurethane finishes are meant for indoor use, as the coating they create isn’t great at regulating temperature and humidity. They are also not very good at deflecting UV radiation from sunlight, but if the sunlight comes through a window, it typically is protected enough.
What is spar-varathane?
Spar varathane, also known as spar urethane, is a type of polyurethane finish that is specifically designed for outdoor use. This type of finish contains special additives that make it more resistant to UV light, water, and other environmental factors. It is typically used in outdoor applications where the woodwork is exposed to the elements, and is usually used on exterior doors, windows, decks, patios, outdoor furniture, and other outdoor woodwork. Urethane and polyurethane are not as resistant to UV light and moisture and, due to wood’s tendency to expand and contract, creates too rigid of a coating that tends to shatter and flake off as time goes on. Spar Varathane is far more flexible and resistant to temperature and humidity changes, allowing the wood underneath to breathe as needed, and as such is the go to for the remodeling industry for outdoor finishing and protective coats.

We understand the importance of selecting the appropriate product for each project to ensure the best possible outcome. Urethane, polyurethane, and spar varathane/spar urethane are all great options for providing a durable, protective finish to surfaces in the remodeling industry. By understanding the differences between these finishes and their applications, homeowners can make informed decisions when selecting the right finishing coat for their project.
