As part of our introductory course for all of our new clients, we’ve created this small blog post that answers one of the most commonly asked questions we receive during a project: “How Do I Make Remodeling Selections?”
A remodeling selection, or material selection, are the new materials and resources a homeowner picks out to upgrade their home during a remodel! This is one of the earliest parts of the decision making process in a remodel because selection costs, in addition to labor, are what make up the budget of your remodel.
Many homeowners find this to be the fun part of the journey, and it’s hard to say it isn’t when you get to put a far more personal touch on your home using new materials! Almost everything new that has to be installed, from appliances to fixtures to paint, is what Reliable Design-Build-Remodel would call a selection.

As we consider the options, you will begin to visualize your new space coming to life. Once your selections are complete, we create 3D drawings of your home including those selections!
Selections come in a wide variety of options, ranging from low-grade, medium range, and upscale materials. Quality is directly connected to durability, lifespan, and aesthetic appeal, but also is tied to price most of all.
This is why a budget is developed extremely early on in the project in the scope of work, even if they’re rough estimates. Establishing a maximum limit for what you’re willing to pay for is essential, as it provides the starting point for what selections you can make going forward!
It’s normal for homeowners to not want to give up certain selections that you really want. However, sometimes there are times where compromises on a specific appliance or countertop may be necessary for the rest of project to run smoothly.

Another bit of advice is that when the project actually moves into the construction phase, your selections will be purchased based on your wants and needs. If you suddenly desire a different kind of countertop or cabinetry for your project, that will increase your budget and project timeframe as we will have to re-order your new selections!
We recommend to think very carefully during the design stage of the project about what materials you want, and you should think about how it should look in your home before you buy, because that can prevent an increase in the budget or timeframe of the project. Being prepared and being confident of your selections is a surefire way to success!
Another great piece of advice we want to share is that you should make a wish list of different materials for your project, and the more detailed the list is the easier it will be to check what can fit into your budget!
We also recommend crafting the list so that you have an economy option, a mid-range option, and a higher-end option for each selection. This way you’ll be able to combine different price figures to not only see what the greatest value you can have added to your home will be, but also to see if you can get more improvements overall than if you had only a single option!
