The honest answer to what a bathroom remodel costs is that it depends, but “it depends” has never helped anyone plan a budget. What follows are the actual numbers seen on real projects across Jefferson and Shelby County, along with what pushes a job toward the low end of a range or the high end of it.
These figures come from three decades of Reliable Design-Build-Remodel’s work in Birmingham-area homes. They are ranges, not quotes, because the house itself always has a say, but they provide a realistic starting point before any contractor is contacted.
The single biggest factor is which bathroom you are remodeling. A powder room and a primary bath are different projects with different plumbing, different square footage, and different expectations. Here is how they typically break down locally:
The most important thing about those ranges is their width. A guest bath can genuinely cost $4,000 or $24,000 depending on scope, which is why a number found online without context is close to meaningless.
Breaking the project into components tends to be more useful than a single lump figure, because it shows where the money actually goes and where there is room to adjust.
Added together, these components show how a bathroom crosses from one tier into the next. It is rarely one extravagant choice, it is four or five moderate upgrades compounding.
This is the part most national cost calculators miss entirely, and it is the reason a Birmingham number is not the same as a national average. A great many homes in this area were built well before current plumbing standards, and what turns up behind the walls affects the budget more than any tile selection.
Cast iron drain lines
Older homes here frequently have cast iron waste lines. When they are corroded or cracked, and after fifty or sixty years many are, they need replacing while the wall is open. It is the right call and it is not optional, but it is an expense nobody planned for while picking out tile.
Galvanized supply piping
Galvanized supply lines corrode from the inside, restricting flow long before they leak. When a wall is opened and they turn up, replacing them with PEX or copper is money well spent, but it does add to the job.
Subfloor rot
Long-term leaks around toilets and tubs damage the subfloor underneath, and the damage often stays hidden until demolition. Repairing structural subfloor is straightforward work, but it has to happen before anything new goes down.
None of these are reasons to avoid remodeling an older home. They are reasons to budget honestly for one. When Reliable walks a bathroom in a home built before the 1980s, these possibilities are discussed up front rather than discovered on day four.
What separates a $15,000 bathroom from a $50,000 one?
Four things account for most of the difference, and only one of them is what most people expect.
When a budget is tight, the most effective move is almost always to keep the plumbing where it is and spend the money on visible finishes. That produces the biggest visual change for the smallest structural cost.
A few principles have served Reliable’s clients well over the years.
Start with a range rather than a number. Reliable uses bracketed pricing early in the process for exactly this reason, it shows what different scopes cost before anything is committed, so the project can be shaped to the budget instead of a mismatch surfacing later.
Set aside a contingency, particularly in an older home. Ten to fifteen percent is reasonable. If the walls come open and everything is sound, that money simply goes unspent.
Decide early what matters most. Almost every bathroom budget has one or two things the homeowner genuinely cares about, a large tile shower, a double vanity, heated floors, and a number of things they are flexible on. Naming those early makes it possible to protect what matters and economize elsewhere.
And get the unglamorous things right. Waterproofing, ventilation, and proper drainage are not the place to save a few hundred dollars. They determine whether the bathroom still looks good in ten years.
For a realistic picture of what a specific bathroom would involve, Reliable’s approach to these projects is outlined on the bathroom remodeling page, or the team can be reached at (205) 988-9194.
