Choosing the Right Exterior Color Palette for Your Home

Your exterior walls play a large role in contributing to your home’s overall curb appeal. Many people, however, find it challenging to pick the right paint color that suits the style of their home. To help you make the right decision, Reliable Design-Build-Remodel, a home addition contractor, shares some tips on picking the perfect exterior color palette for your home.

Exterior Color Palette and Architectural Style

As a rule of thumb, exterior colors should always suit your property’s overall architectural design. Mismatching colors may compromise its look and even make it stand out for all the wrong reasons. For instance, painting a classic Craftsman-style home with hot pink or burnt orange will make your exterior look absurd.

Get in touch with your local painting contractor if you’re not sure which color to choose that fits your home’s design. We offer a range of paint options to get the results you want.

Exterior Color Palette and UV Light

Few homeowners realize that the color of their exterior walls affects their home’s energy efficiency. Lighter colors and shades are the best options since darker tones tend to absorb heat. As a general rule, darker paint colors can be used to highlight details. For the rest, stick with lighter colors. Remember that the lighter the color, the more potent its reflective property.

Don’t Stick to One Color

To avoid having a monochromatic exterior, choose at least three colors that work well together. An exterior scheme is made of three parts, including field (also known as the main color), accent and trim. As mentioned earlier, the accent color should always be darker. The field color, on the other hand, should have a lighter shade. Lastly, trim color is for the window and door casings as well as the roof edge to create depth.
