Degreasing Pipes: A Homeowner’s Guide from Reliable Design-Build-Remodel

At Reliable Design-Build-Remodel, serving the greater Birmingham, AL area, we understand that the inner workings of your plumbing system aren’t always top of mind—until something goes wrong. One of the most common culprits behind slow drains, backups, and bad odors is grease buildup in pipes. Whether it’s from cooking oils, soaps, or everyday grime, grease can wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing over time. That’s why we’ve created this helpful guide to answer the most frequently asked questions about degreasing pipes and keeping your system running smoothly.

How do I degrease my pipes?

Degreasing your pipes can be a relatively simple task if done regularly and correctly. One of the most effective methods is to flush your drains with a mixture of very hot (but not boiling) water, dish soap, and baking soda followed by vinegar. Start by pouring half a cup of baking soda into the drain, then add half a cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture fizz for 10-15 minutes, as this helps break down grease and food particles. Finally, flush the pipe with hot water and a few drops of degreasing dish soap. For kitchens especially, doing this routine once a month can significantly reduce grease buildup and help maintain smooth drainage. It’s a homeowner-friendly solution that we often recommend before resorting to more aggressive measures.

How do plumbers get grease out of pipes?

Professional plumbers have access to more advanced tools and techniques when it comes to removing grease from your pipes. At Reliable Design-Build-Remodel, we often use mechanical drain augers (also known as plumbing snakes) or hydro jetting systems. Hydro jetting is one of the most effective ways to remove thick grease clogs; it involves blasting high-pressure water through the pipes to break up and flush out grease, debris, and other blockages. In extreme cases, we may need to disassemble sections of pipe to manually clean them or replace damaged components. If you’ve tried DIY methods and are still experiencing slow drains or foul odors, calling in a professional is the safest and most thorough way to address the issue.

What is the best chemical to dissolve grease in pipes?

There are several commercial drain cleaners marketed for grease removal, but not all are created equal. For heavy grease buildup, a product specifically designed to cut through fats, oils, and grease—often labeled as “FOG dissolvers”—is most effective. Enzyme-based drain cleaners are a great long-term solution because they use natural bacteria and enzymes to digest organic material, including grease, without harming your pipes or the environment. However, for immediate results, a foaming degreaser that contains sodium hydroxide (lye) may be more powerful. Sulphuric acid, followed slowly by a quarter the volume of 30% hydrogen peroxide, is another powerful alternative. Be sure to always wear gloves, goggles, and pour very carefully no matter what substance you use.

What dissolves oil in pipes?

Oil and grease are notoriously difficult to remove once they’ve cooled and solidified inside your plumbing. While hot water and dish soap help in small amounts, they often just push the oil farther down the line. That’s where enzymes and bio-based cleaners come in handy—they break down fats at the molecular level, turning grease and oil into water-soluble substances that can safely pass through your pipes. Additionally, high-temperature hydro jetting (as mentioned earlier) is extremely effective at dissolving hardened oils. Some homeowners also use a degreasing solution made from a mix of lemon juice, baking soda, and hot water as a gentle, eco-friendly alternative. At Reliable Design-Build-Remodel, we encourage preventative care—avoiding oil disposal down the sink is always the first and best step to protecting your pipes.

Will boiling water damage PVC pipes?

While it may seem that on initial inspection boiling water might not be the best idea for plastic pipes, the speed of the boiling water going down, coupled with the fact that the temperature rating for PVC is 140°F under pressure, means that it’s perfectly fine to pour boiling hot water down your sink. If you’re trying to degrease pipes, the boiling water may get stuck and cause some minor warping or damage to the pipes if it remains trapped for a longer period of time. Boiling water is also dangerous, for obvious reasons, so it’s probably better to stick using chemical degreasers.

Grease buildup in pipes is a common yet preventable issue that can affect the comfort, cleanliness, and safety of your home. With regular maintenance and the right degreasing techniques for pipes, you can avoid costly repairs and keep your plumbing in excellent condition.
