A Basic Guide on Maintaining Engineered Wood Floors

Often less expensive than solid wood flooring, engineered wood flooring has been a staple in American homes for years. Aside from the friendlier price tag, engineered wood floors are also a favorite among homeowners and design and build companies alike because of their relatively low maintenance requirements. If you are thinking about installing and maintaining engineered hardwood floors for your home, here’s a quick guide on how to keep them in tip-top shape.

Key Tips to Maintaining Engineered Hardwood Floors:

Add Protection

As the old saying goes, prevention is often the best cure, and this is especially true for engineered wood floors. Consider sticking felt pads under heavy furniture, and avoid dragging items across the floor to prevent them from getting scratched up. If you have pets, make sure that their claws are trimmed regularly.

Keep Them Clean

When it comes to engineered wood floors, you should clean them as lightly as possible. Vacuum, dust or sweep frequently to collect dirt. Avoid using a soaking wet mop as wood is hygroscopic, which means it will act like a sponge and expand if it gets too wet. If you need to get rid of a stubborn stain, use a damp piece of cloth with a little wood floor cleaner instead.

Fill up Cracks and Scratches

While engineered wood floors are highly durable, it is not uncommon for them to get scratched or cracked, especially in high-traffic areas. If this happens, the issues can easily be remedied using a wood-colored wax stick with an appropriate shade. There are repair kits available that contain wax sticks in several shades so a quick touch-up can easily be done without the help of an experienced floor installer.
